Rip-roaring basketball action is expected to unfurl on Feb. 19 when the Saipan Centennial Lions Club, in cooperation with the Tan Sui Lin Foundation, launches the SCLC Basketball League at the Gillette Multi-Purpose Gymnasium in Gualo Rai.
The competition will have two divisions—the open category for 18-to-44-year-olds and the masters category for 45-and-above players.
Coordinator Mikee Guirey said the basketball league is a great way to promote physical fitness in the community as well as raise funds for a worthy cause.
“We would like to invite the Saipan community to join the club’s fundraising event, the SCLC Basketball League, slated on Feb. 19, 2022. The tournament will run from Feb. 19 up to April 16 at the former REM Center,” he said.
Guirey added that proceeds from the fundraising event will be used for the Lions Club global causes that include helping curb the prevalence of diabetes and improving the quality of life of those diagnosed with the lifestyle disease.
He also said funds raised will also go to Lion Club’s campaign to prevent blindness and improve the quality of life of people who are blind and visually impaired.
“We will use the money we raised for the local community and outside the island so many people can have access to nutritious food and sustainably protect and restore our environment to improve the well-being of all communities,” added Guirey.
Co-coordinator Boy Garcia said they will entertain the first eight teams that submit applications per category.
“It’s good to finally have 5×5 basketball action on island. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, basketball leagues have come too few and far in between. We assure everyone that this league will strictly follow protocols set by the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. and the Governor’s COVID-19 Task Force,” said the veteran basketball coach.
Teams interested in joining the SCLC Basketball League, the entry fee is $600 (jerseys not included) and you may contact Mikee Guirey through (670) 989-2632 or Boy Garcia (670) 989-6387 to register or for further details.
Saipan Centennial Lions Club is part of Lions Club International and a chartered club since June 20, 2018 under District 204 Region 2.
