Torres says they are ‘addressing’ DOC manpower shortage
Gov. Ralph DLG. Torres said Tuesday last week that they are trying to address the acute manpower shortage at the Department of Corrections in Susupe after a few Corrections officers and some inmates tested positive for COVID-19.
Torres said the situation at DOC is a little different because DOC officers have specialized trainings and that they cannot just pull anybody from anywhere and assign them there.
The governor said they are looking into cross-training those that have prior work history with DOC to augment its manpower. He said they are also trying to obtain help from the Department of Public Safety.
House of Representative vice speaker Blas Jonathan T. Attao (R-Saipan) disclosed Monday the severe manpower shortage at DOC due to some Corrections officers and inmates testing positive for the virus. Attao said some police officers were then sent to DOC to beef up its manpower, but a few of them also caught the virus, depleting their manpower even more.
The vice speaker has emphasized the need to help DOC through emergency hiring of Corrections officers to address the worsening manpower shortage situation.
