Detectives are investigating an ex-convict in connection with the killing of bartender Emerita “Emie” Relata Romero, sources disclosed yesterday.

Sources said the ex-convict, who is a known “ice” user, was among the persons investigated by detectives last week.

The ex-convict, sources said, has been seen regularly hanging out at Garapan nightclubs.

Romero and the ex-convict possibly knew each other, sources said.

Detectives, sources said, have tried to verify information that the ex-convict’s car was seen at the Marianas Resort area between Feb. 5 and 6, 2012.

It was not clear whether something substantial came out during the investigation of the ex-convict last week, a source said.

Other sources, however, stated that there are also rumors that the ex-convict may have information about the killer.

Sources also disclosed that investigators have narrowed down the suspect’s car as a Toyota sedan.

Saipan Tribune opted not to disclose the model so not to jeopardize the ongoing authorities’ investigation.

Romero was last seen alive boarding a green or blue tinted sedan around 3am on Feb. 5 near her residence in Garapan.

During a search, FBI agents found her body two days later in the northernmost building of the former La Fiesta Mall in San Roque.

Romero’s remains were flown to the Philippines on Saturday morning aboard a Delta Air Lines flight via Japan. Romero’s siblings, Eduardo Relata and Estrellita “Lhet” Relata, accompanied the body.
