WWII-era munitions will be blown up today in Marpi
A munitions team will be detonating vintage World War II-era munitions at the Saipan Marpi Blow Pit today, Dec. 22, 2021, from 12:30pm to 4pm.
This means the Marpi Road, Marpi Landfill, Banzai Cliff, Suicide Cliff, and Grotto will be closed starting at 12:30pm for the duration of this operation.
In a notice yesterday from the CNMI Emergency Operation Center-State Warning Point, it said a HydroGeologic Munitions Team will be detonating the vintage munitions at the Marpi Blow Pit and the public is being warned to stay away from this site within 500 feet radius on all quadrants up to 2,500 feet above sea level.
Due to the danger imposed by these activities, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres is strongly advising the public—especially fishermen, commercial pilots, and marine tour operators— to stay away from these areas during the time and date indicated.
The cooperation and understanding of the public is greatly appreciated. Should you have any questions, contact the CNMI Emergency Operation Center-State Warning Point at (670) 237-8000, VHF Marine CHNL 16, and HF single side band radio on 5.205.0 for this advisory. (PR)
