Burt Suda topped the Fil-Taga Golfers Association December Ace last Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Kingfisher Golf Links in Talafofo.

The 53-year-old golfer shot a net 72 to win the final monthly tournament of the year. The Chuuk-born but Saipan-raised Suda actually finished with a gross of 90, but his 18 handicap gave him the score to beat among qualified golfers in December.

Freddie Cataluna actually fired a tourney best net 69 in December built around a 71 gross and low 2 handicap. However, he already won last October and club rules prevent ace winners to double dip.

William Retardo also beat Suda in a tiebreak for second place after also firing a net of 72 (80 gross on an 8 handicap), but since the Pacific Islands Club Saipan executive chef already won in May, he was no longer eligible to win in December.

Suda was overjoyed by winning the December ace and in the process got the last ticket for Fil-Taga’s Ace of Aces yearend tournament next month.

“Oh man, it was a good day for golf and I think I owe it to the guys in our grouping. Freddie and William were so good that it motivated my charge to do my best. You can’t make too many mistakes when playing with those two single-handicappers,” he said.

Suda, who started playing the sport in 1993, said he had an inkling even before the December Ace last Saturday that he was due for a win.

“This December Ace tourney was one I was looking forward to play and truly a great club—Fil-Taga. Can’t wait for the Ace of Aces next month.”

In the par 3 competition, the winners were Cataluna in hole No. 3, Retardo in hole No. 10, and Suda and Dan Ganacias in hole No. 5.

The other monthly winners for 2021 and qualifiers for Fil-Taga’s Ace of Aces set for Jan. 8 and 15, 2022 at the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort and Kingfisher Golf Links, respectively, are the following: Henry Bautista (January), Ganacias (February), Eli Buenaventura (March), Tony Cabrera (April), Retardo (May), Lito Mendoza (June), Ruben Avendano (July), Ronnie Santos (August), Mike Cruz (September), Cataluna (October), and Ed Varias (November). Both playdates for the two-day Ace of Aces tournament will have tee offs at 12pm.
