DYS undergoing case management classes

The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs’ Division of Youth Services is going through what is described as an “intensive course” for two days, studying case management and human services protocol.
The course, which is being held at Charley’s Cabaret of the Pacific Islands Club, started yesterday, May 15, and ends today, May 16. Christopher Jones, Northern Marianas College psychology, human development, and case management instructor, is teaching the course.
About 26 staff is undergoing training.
Jones said the course is part of DYS’ yearly training to improve staff skills and make them better at their jobs.
“I am teaching how to assist and facilitate clients having varying behavioral needs, and taking them from start to finish and be more congruent,” he said.
Jones said it is an intensive course because it is a full class for “only two days.”
Among the topics taken up on the first day are ethics, “what is case management?”, attitudes and boundaries, problem clarification, difficult issues, disarming anger, and client communication.
DYS will undergo case question intake, suicide issues, combining skills, initial intake interviews, social history, assessment, and mental status exams today.
DCCA Secretary Laura Ogumoro said they get similar trainings in case management as one of DYS’s training sessions for their staff.
“Training staff consistently is important and is part of the state plan,” she said.
