Rip currents present; small craft advisory in effect
The public is being warned that there is a high risk of rip currents through Thursday in east facing reefs of the Marianas. Also, a small craft advisory is now in effect until 6am today, Wednesday.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Guam and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, dangerous rip currents are expected on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota through tomorrow, Thursday.
Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The public is being warned to avoid venturing out towards east facing reefs. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
East winds will be around 20 knots, with gusts of up to 25 knots and seas will be 8 to 10 feet in Marianas coastal waters until 6am today. Conditions will be hazardous to small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in these hazardous conditions. (PR)
