Public warned of high surf, rip currents

A high surf advisory is now in effect until 6pm Wednesday. A high rip current risk remains in effect through late Friday night.

Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Guam and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, large breaking waves of up to 12 feet will be present in the surf zone and dangerous rip currents in north and east facing reefs of the Marianas.

This will create dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

The public is urged to stay out of the water along north and east facing shores. Elsewhere, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, swim in a direction following the shoreline until you are out of the current, then head in to shore. (PR)
