Mafnas featured speaker at security webinar

Director Jose C. Mafnas of CNMI Customs Biosecurity of the Department of Finance was one of three keynote speakers in the Joint Heads of Pacific Security Pre-Event Webinar that had the theme, “Opening Borders: Shared Risks, Collective Solutions.”

This webinar aimed to stimulate discussions on practical approaches to address shared risks that can assist inform our security leaders’ thinking. The main event, Joint Heads of Pacific Security Conference will be held virtually next month.  

Mafnas presented on Counterfeit Cases in the CNMI, highlighting strengths and weaknesses and what to focus on moving forward as global opening of borders expands. Other case studies included: Human Security–Learning from the Pacific Humanitarian Pathway and Biosecurity–Ministry of Health and Ministry of Prime Minister and Cabinet (Immigration), Samoa.

The impact of the pandemic on the well-being of Pacific communities is widely acknowledged. The pandemic has created immense challenges globally, and the economic impacts of restricted travel are severe in those Pacific countries that are heavily reliant on tourism and face-to-face business activity.  

Mafnas’ presentation focused on personnel, training and resources as the backbone of interceptions; however, more can be achieved with increased partnerships among local, regional and federal organizations.  

The CNMI Customs Biosecurity is registered to attend the conference next month to continue the dialogue and gain insight to strengthening border security in order to prevent the importation of illicit goods and narcotics. (PR)
