Run Saipan added a twist to its next monthly underground run by incorporating a water element to its 5K Dash & Splash event on Oct. 30 at the East Bay of Lao Lao Bay.
The 5K run starts at 6am and actually was originally planned in 2018, according to Run Saipan president Edward Dela Cruz Jr.
“The Lao Lao Bay race was going to happen with Oceania Athletics Association president Robin Sapong in 2018, but Super Typhoon Yutu kicked the plan back. We are reviving the race project now,” he said.
Dela Cruz said they added the water element in the run in honor of Athletics Run Jump And Throw.
“Runners will still run the course (dash) and at the finish line they can either jump into the water off of East Bay (splash) or those do not wish to dive off they will have an item to throw into the bay at a target (throw) to complete their race time. It’s holiday season around the corner and we just wanted our runners to have a fun run with a stunning trail race,” he said.
After the 5K Dash & Splash, participants are encouraged to take part in a beach cleanup.
“It was all Dr. Ron’s (Run Saipan secretary and treasurer Ron Snyder) idea for the finish line. This event is also a beach cleanup. So please stay back with us after the race at Lao Lao Bay and help clean up our precious beach. The main objective is to highlight Lao Lao Bay and how beautiful it is and to do our part to clean it up,” said Dela Cruz.
And for those wanting to celebrate Halloween early, Run Saipan said runners can run the course in their favorite costumes. “Come in costume or wear Halloween orange for a head start in the race!”
