‘Online Rakugo’ at Hyatt this Saturday
Rakugo, one of Japan’s traditional performing arts that dates back to more than 400 years ago during the Edo period, will take center stage at the Hyatt Regency Saipan Ballroom this Saturday, Oct. 23, with an online live performance by Katsura Sunshine from 1pm to 5pm.
Hosted by the Consular Office of Japan in Saipan and the Japanese Society of the Northern Mariana Islands, the “Online Rakugo” will showcase Sunshine, whose real name is Gregory Robic, a Canadian who initially went to Japan in 1999 to study noh, another form of traditional Japanese theater.
In rakugo, a story with a humorous ending is told by one person who will often play many characters and advance the story through hand gestures and many other physical movements.
Robic, who graduated from the University of Toronto and currently resides in New York became an apprentice under well-known, traditional rakugo master Katsura Bunshi for three years. After his apprenticeship, Robic embarked on a five-year world tour performing as Katsura Sunshine in five continents and 15 countries.
Due to limited capacity at the Hyatt ballroom, the consulate and the Japanese society ask those interested to confirm attendance by Friday, Oct. 22 by calling 670-323-7201 or 7202 or by emailing the consulate at cojsaipan@ag.mofa.go.jp.
