Kilili legislation seeks to increase number of Veterans Centers, Outpatient Clinics

Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) introduced Friday a legislation that seeks to increase the number of Veterans Centers and Veterans Administration’s Community Based Outpatient Clinics in areas facing capacity issues or without access to either facility.

Sablan said in his e-kilili newsletter over the weekend that, under his legislation, called “Vet Centers for Mental Health Act,” veterans in the Marianas across America will have access to Veteran Administration’s health care closer to home.

The other co-authors of the legislation are Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-New Jersey), Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minnesota), Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio), and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pennsylvania).

For the Marianas, that means establishment of both a Vet Center and VA Community Based Outpatient Clinics so the veterans no longer have to travel long distances for care, he said.

“Vet Centers provide readjustment counseling and mental health services for veterans, active duty service members, and their families,” he said.

At CBOCs, he said, veterans can receive primary and specialty health care from dedicated full-time VA staff.

Sablan said both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion support the bill.
