NMICF ‘Radar Challenge’ this Sunday

Northern Mariana Islands Cycling Federation will hold a fundraising race this Sunday to help send CNMI delegates to the inaugural Pacific Cup and Tour de Guam in neighboring Guam this December.
Dubbed the “Radar Challenge,” the race will start at the former Mariana Resort & Spa and proceed north to Suicide Cliff before turning back to the Bird Island Lookout, then go to Banzai Cliff, and on the old Pacific Barrier Radar station in San Roque for the finish line.
NMICF official Jay Diyco said they’re expecting at least 40 participants in the fundraising cycling race.
“We choose this route to make it different from our usual race routes and to challenge bikers on the uphill finish,” he said.
The Radar Challenge will have a 6am start on Sunday, Oct. 10.
Participants are required to pre-register online. Registration fee is $10 and may be paid on the day of the race.
Proceeds from the Radar Challenge will go to the CNMI cycling team that will take part in Oceania Cycling Confederation’s first-ever Pacific Cup and Tour de Guam on Dec. 12, 2021.
Joel Buco and Ayana Braxton topped the Pacific Cup tryouts held last August. Buco was the first male cyclist to complete the 10-mile individual time trial from Banzai Cliff to the Mobil gas station in Tanapag and back to Banzai Cliff in 25:44.
Completing the Top 3 in the men’s division were Mark Isip, who come in at 27:16, and Cesar Fortaleza at 28:35. Meanwhile, Braxton was the lone female who took part in the tryout, coming in 16th overall in a time of 31:34.
Diyco earlier said the top male and female finishers in the individual time trial will get an all-expense paid trip to Guam courtesy of Oceania Cycling Confederation. The rest of the delegates’ costs going to Guam will be shouldered by the local federation and will be raised through fundraisers.
