In British culture, afternoon tea with family or friends is a part of daily routine, the perfect time to catch up or celebrate special occasions.
That is now also possible on Saipan, with Jhen’s Sweet Corner in Dan Dan perfecting the art of afternoon tea by creating a dainty ambiance paired with freshly baked cakes, pastries, and tea.
Owner and baker Jennifer Ortiz said the shop and the idea of afternoon teas literally started at home. “I used my baking skills to make customized birthday cakes for my children, and friends really liked the quality, taste, and décor, which led me to pursue a home-based business. My niche was being available online and making customized cakes by executing customer’s ideas or vision into reality on cake. Then I branched out to baking other pastries and more friends and their friends started inquiring where my shop is or if I have a venue that they can visit. These encouraged me to finally put up a shop three years after I started an online business, with a unique feature: offering afternoon tea packages,” she said.

Jhen’s Sweet Corner opened in April this year and can sit 15 to 20 people. The pink surrounding and interiors that consist of flowers on the walls, pastel-colored tables and chairs, a velvet sofa and a bright chandelier makes a vivid impression, provides an instant photo opportunity, and will make you just sit down and enjoy a slice of cake and tea.
“We have an Afternoon Tea Package for adults and children: $20 per head for adults that includes one mini cake, sugar cookies, French macarons, cupcakes, tarts, crème brulée, croissant and unlimited hot/iced tea; and $10 each for children that includes cupcakes, cookies, French macarons, brownies and unlimited hot or cold iced tea,” Ortiz said.

“We accommodate private parties or meetings, no charge [for] the venue as long as you avail of the tea package and have a minimum of 15 people. If they want to bring their own food, we charge $100 to rent the place and that is good for two hours,” Ortiz added.
If you simply want to have desserts and drinks or buy a box for your family to enjoy at home, you are welcome, Ortiz said. “We have ready cakes and pastries available like our ube, tiramisu, and red velvet cakes, French macarons, tarts, brownies, and cupcakes.”
