Members of the community are invited to attend the upcoming Domestic Violence Awareness Month proclamation signing ceremony that will be held at 10am on Monday, Oct. 4, 2021, at Saipan World Resort’s Royal Taga Hall.

The ceremony, which will be hosted by the Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence and other community partners, will recognize the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the CNMI. This year’s theme for the CNMI is “Healing Forward.”

The event will also feature the presentation of the annual Bridge of Light Award. The recipient is nominated and chosen based on their accomplishments and/or efforts to end domestic violence and sexual assault, and to be a “Bridge of Light” for victims and survivors in the CNMI. This year’s award sponsors include Bridge Capital, IT&E, and the Tan Siu Lin Foundation.

Community members are also invited to take part in other DVAM events, including the upcoming DVAM Handwaving on Rota on Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, that will begin at 3:30pm in the area between Teteto and Guata.

Next, the DVAM Day of Prayer will be on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021, with various faith-based organizations pledging to spend this day talking with their congregation about domestic violence and supporting victims and survivors. Confirmed organizations include Cornerstone Christian Church, Grace Christian Academy, and Mount Carmel Cathedral, which will have DVAM organizers participating in their Mass at 9am.

The next event is the Purple Wave, Walk & Roll Against Domestic Violence on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021, at the NMI Museum. The event will open with registration at 4:30pm along with poster-making activities. The roadside waving will start after 5pm followed by the Walk & Roll. Registrants will also receive free DVAM T-shirts, while supplies last.

Right after the Walk & Roll will be the Candlelight Vigil for Victims of Domestic Violence at 6:30pm at the NMI Museum. This purpose of this event is to light a candle to remember and grieve those we lost to domestic violence.

The next event is the Light of Unity at 5:30pm on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021, at the Tun Kindo’ Baseball Field on Rota. This event will have the community “light up” the baseball field to honor victims and survivors, and acknowledge those still living with domestic violence.

There will also be discussions with a variety of guest speakers on topics related to domestic violence on KKMP 92.1 FM starting at 8am on Thursday, Sept. 30 and then every Wednesday at 8am in October.
