‘Next batch of stimulus cards going to a large group’

Finance Secretary David DLG Atalig said Friday that they anticipate large group of taxpayers would get their CNMI stimulus cards in the next distribution.

Atalig said they have already distributed over 20,000 stimulus cards but they are aware that there are still some who have not gotten their cards yet.

Speaking about the stimulus card distribution during a radio press briefing, Atalig said that those who did not get a stimulus card need to submit their 2020 tax return, even if they have zero income. He disclosed that they have a bunch of zero income filers who still need to file their 2020 tax return in order to get a local stimulus.

“Keep in mind it takes about seven to 10 days to get the cards here,” said Atalig, without giving am estimate as to how many are in the second batch.

He said he is looking at options to make it quicker, such as issuing blank cards that don’t have the taxpayers’ name on it.

“We can order cards and make it quicker so that this next batch can be able to get stimulus [faster] and help their family,” the secretary said.

To ensure that the money is circulated within the CNMI economy and is not used elsewhere, these pre-paid debit stimulus cards are geo-restricted so they can’t be used outside the Commonwealth.

Eligible individuals are receiving $500 and $500 for each dependent.

Finance earlier stated that they expect to release $25 million for 28,000 local stimulus checks using American Rescue Plan Act money.
