Center for Living Independently on Tinian soon

Tinian will soon have its own Center for Living Independently in the CNMI.

According to CLI-CNMI executive director Susan Satur yesterday, Tinian has requested her office to have a full-blown facility much like the CLI-CNMI main location on Capital Hill. The goal, she said, is to have CLIs on both Tinian and Rota. Soon after yesterday’s interview, Satur joined a virtual meeting with the Tinian leadership to discuss the creation of the Tinian facility.

Currently, CLI-CNMI’s Saipan office operates out of a model home that provides instruction in daily living skills for individuals with disabilities. The facility features a garden, kitchen, laundry room, and computer room, among other things.

As for Rota, Satur said she will speak with the Rota leadership in the upcoming months and acknowledged that each of the CNMI’s handicapped communities have their own different needs.

“We’re trying to open a center [on] Tinian just like the center here…but the center on Rota will be a different type of center, as each community has their own needs and we’re trying to meet the needs of that community,” said Satur.

When asked for a timeline for the creation of a CLI in Tinian, Satur said that CLI first needs the go-ahead of the legislative delegation for Tinian and Aguiguan before it can begin planning the creation of the Tinian facility. “The sooner the better, because we’re really trying to meet their needs”, said Satur.
