As of July 24, a total of 2,563 Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Federal Pandemic Compensation applications remain unprocessed by the Commonwealth, according to Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP).

Citing U.S. Department of Labor reports, Sablan disclosed over the weekend via his e-kilili newsletter that the CNMI has $273,895,997 that’s available to pay out remaining PUA claims and a balance of $223,137,461 to cover FFUC claims.

As of press time yesterday, Saipan Tribune was still waiting for comments from Labor Secretary Vicky Benavente.

The delegate said a total of $103,559,003 in PUA claims have been paid out along with $105,837,130 for PFUC since last summer.

Meanwhile, Sablan also disclosed that President Joe Biden authorized $3,133,540 for the Marianas on Thursday as part of a nationwide investment in climate resiliency.

He said the funding will come through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program and is intended to make communities like the CNMI better able to weather the impacts of climate change.

“Increased frequency and intensity of typhoons are among the predicted results as the oceans and air heat up because of increased carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere,” Sablan said.
