Grant funds podcast on surviving domestic violence

The Northern Marianas Humanities Council announced yesterday Community Grant recipient Jennifer Taman’s upcoming project, “Domestic Violence and CNMI Culture,” which will create a podcast series and workshop that examine how cultural upbringing is related to sexual and domestic violence.
Taman is the co-founder and project director of Women of Destiny, a non-profit organization that provides aftercare for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and people in recovery.
“I am a survivor myself,” said Taman. “Domestic violence survivors have been silent for a long time and it’s time for us to speak up. I want to be a voice for the voiceless.”
The podcast, titled Let’s Speak Out CNMI, will feature interviews with domestic violence survivors as well as advocates and experts on the topic.
“This podcast is about women who have survived a traumatic event in their life. We want to incorporate how cultural upbringing affected their decisions and made them stay in an abusive relationship,” Taman said. “It’s also about healing. For me as a victim, I find it healing when I share my story. I hope that, as I interview these survivors, it can be a part of their healing as well.”
The podcast will be published online through PineCast, aired on local radio stations, and shared with organizations such as Karidat Social Services, the Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, and Women of Destiny for education and therapy purposes. Taman will also be hosting a domestic violence educational workshop that uses the podcast as a way to inspire more dialogue and education about the topic. Collaborating with Taman on this project is Maisie Tenorio, Catherine Perry, and Women of Destiny.
