Gas prices up by 15 cents

After over a week since the first rollback in fuel prices, the CNMI saw another hike in gas prices, this time an increase of 15 cents.

Mobil Oil Marianas led the way early yesterday morning after it raised its fuel prices by 15 cents per gallon.

As of press time, Shell Marianas had yet to increase its prices. Shell Marianas typically follows Mobil’s lead, usually raising its prices a day later, as seen in the past.

From $4.72 a gallon, Mobil Oil Marianas increased its Extra fuel price to $ 4.87 a gallon. Mobil also raised its Supreme fuel from $5.17 a gallon to $5.32 while its diesel also went up from $4.88 a gallon to $5.03.

According to a 22-year-old motorist, he knew the reduction wasn’t going to last long. “It was just a matter of time before they hiked it back up. I’m not surprised. I was more surprised when the prices rolled back, actually,” he said.

Another motorist, a 17-year-old female, said it is unfortunate that the rollback only lasted about a week. “They rolled it back 10 cents just to hike it back up by 15 cents. It’s like they didn’t roll back at all. People are struggling, we shouldn’t be hiking prices, we should be lowering them or at the very least keeping them the same,” she said.

An 18-year-old female echoed her friend, stating that maybe it doesn’t seem like much to those who are well off, but for those who aren’t, 15 cents is a big deal.

“Some people might not care, but for people who are worried about how they’re going to make ends meet, 15 cents add up and it’s money they can put into buying something to eat,” she said.
