Trial for habitual offender begins today

The bench trial of a habitual offender who is facinng charges of theft is set to begin today, Aug. 4, at 10am at the Superior Court in Susupe.
Vicente S. Basa, 69, a repeat offender who is accused of stealing alcoholic drinks from Twins Supermarket in Dandan, is set to face Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho today for his bench trial.
Basa will be answering to the allegation that he unlawfully took the property of Twins Supermarket in Dandan on March 27, with intent to permanently deprive the owner of its right to the property.
Back in 2020 Basa was arrested for trying to run over a man with a car and repeatedly ramming a parked vehicle in Kagman 3.
In that case, Basa was facing a possible maximum sentence of 24 years and six months if he had gone to trial. However, because he pleaded guilty to theft of a vehicle, Basa was sentenced to one-year imprisonment, all but 90 days suspended. Basa was also given credit for 59 days of time served.
Basa was placed on probation for three years following his release from that case and was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $12,955.78 to the victim in the case.
Basa was ordered to pay court costs in the amount of $25 and his license was immediately revoked, although he could apply for reinstatement of his driver’s license six months from his release from prison.
Back in 2017, Basa was charged with assaulting the husband of his niece. Basa pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace as part of a plea deal and was sentenced to one-year imprisonment, all suspended except for the first 32 days.
