Deer conservation bill introduced

Rep. Patrick H. San Nicolas (R-Tinian) has introduced legislation that will prohibit deer hunting for up to two years on Tinian.

House Local Bill 22-20 seeks to ensures that ample supply of food sources on Tinian will be protected for current and future generations.

“Although our deer population is not as numerous as our neighbors [on] Rota, I feel that what little we have on Tinian should be allowed to grow and flourish. I’m currently increasing my efforts to help all native plants and wildlife thrive on Tinian while maintaining a balanced ecosystem for the benefit of the environment and for future generations to enjoy,” said San Nicolas.

His staff is also looking into grants and awards that can be given to Tinian to expand education and outreach, increase research, and maintain wildlife and vegetation.

“The deer are not native, they got to Tinian decades ago. We want to make sure they thrive and be a part of our island and ecosystem, and we must nurture their growth.,” San Nicolas added. (PR)
