Investigation on Marpi hit-and-run enters Day 6
The investigation to uncover what happened on the night of July 27 in the fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman entered Day 6 yesterday with the Department of Public Safety not reporting any progress yet.
Six days since the fatal hit-and-run, DPS spokesperson Dre Pangelinan said the case is still under investigation and could not confirm whether there is a suspect or not.
As of Sunday, Pangelinan said the driver has yet to turn himself in, contrary yto news circulating in the internet.
Family and friends of the deceased have identified the victim in several social media channels as Sophia Patricia Aldan Demapan. Demapan’s loved ones have launched a JusticeForSophia movement on various social media platforms to raise awareness about the accident in hopes of getting the answers they are searching for.
In support of the movement, many have also gone up to the scene of the accident to place candles and flowers on the spot where the victim’s body had been found.
According to Saipan Tribune archives, the victim’s body was found by a person who was driving home at around 9pm last Tuesday and noticed a body on the shoulder of Route 30 in Marpi. The caller immediately stopped to help and called the police for assistance.
At the scene, police noticed tire marks near where they found the unresponsive female. Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services responders saw multiple lacerations and deformities on the female’s body. In addition, the officers also noticed that she sustained multiple fractures and severe injuries to her head.
They transported the woman to the Commonwealth Health Center where she was pronounced dead at 1am.
