Parts of northern Saipan will experience power interruptions from 5am to 5:30am and from 11:30am to noon on Saturday, July 24, to allow the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. to replace two rotten power poles, replace airbrake switches, and lift sagging power lines in Lower Base.

The specific areas that will experience the two scheduled outages on Saturday are Lower Base, a portion of the north side of Sadog Tasi, government offices, Capital Hill, As Quina, Mt. Tapochao, Talofofo, I-Deni, Agag, As Teo, Papago, and Kagman 1 to 4. The two traffic lights near the Mobil gas stations in Sadog Tasi and Kagman will be affected by the scheduled outages as well.

According to CUC, the purpose of the outages is to allow for work on a project near CUC’s Power Plant 1. Two rotted power poles in the area will be replaced with concrete poles, two defective airbrake switches will be replaced, and sagging primary lines will be lifted.

Airbrake switches are used to turn on and off the power supply of certain parts of an overhead power transmission line. Primary lines are the power lines that transport high-voltage electricity from an electricity substation to a pole’s transformer.
