The Saipan Mayor’s Office will be giving away house numbers to some homeowners for free , which it intends to buy using funds from a $150,000 Technical Assistance Program grant it recently got from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs.

According to special assistant to the mayor Henry Hofschneider yesterday, the SMO will use the funds to buy physical house numbers, and in the future will issue these numbers to homeowners free of charge while supplies last. The SMO will only issue homeowners their free numbers if they indicate to the SMO in some way that the numbers will be attached to the house within two weeks of being given the house numbers.

Hofschneider said the SMO’s Saipan Street Naming and Addressing Division will revisit the houses it has already assigned street numbers to and will provide these residences with house numbers while supplies last. Hofschneider also said that homeowners will be responsible for attaching the numbers to their residences themselves, as the SMO and the division want to avoid the risk of homeowners claiming that the office and its team members damaged their house.

The SMO was awarded the $150,000 grant on June 26, and was given a spending period from June 26 to Sep. 30, 2022. As of Thursday, Hofschneider said that the $150,000 is available for expenditure, and that the CNMI Department of Finance’s Federal Grant Section has already created an account for the grant. The SMO will use this account to pull out grant funds as needed.

Saipan Tribune previously reported that the SMO and its Saipan Street Naming and Addressing Division have already completed assigning unique building numbers to homes in Koblerville, parts of San Vicente, Chalan Kanoa, and Susupe as well as a large portion of the homes to the right of the route from Chalan Monsignor Guerrero Road going up to As Terlaje.
