SCA inks lease for new site
Beth Pliscou of Saipan Cares for Animals signed Tuesday the lease for a new site in As Lito where the animal welfare nonprofit group will soon transfer, in compliance with Zoning regulations.
It was learned from its Facebook page that Pliscou signed the lease with Lynette Lizama Villagomez, who reportedly reached out to SCA a few months ago after learning about the group’s urgent need for a new space for SCA. “She offered to give us a 10-year lease on her huge 6,000-square-meter piece of land for an affordable price in order to help the people and animals of Saipan,” the Facebook post stated.
SCA, which is currently located in As Gonno, clarified that it is not moving yet to the new location as there is still a lot to do before the land is ready for move in. SCA described its new site as completely undeveloped right now and will need to be bulldozed and cleared “before we can even begin to think of fencing, kennels, or building a new clinic complete with power, water, and sewage.”
SCA hopes to be able to accomplish all of this in the next six months, but that all depends on the Zoning board’s decision whether to allow SCA to keep operating at its current place while SCA gets the new location ready for move in.
“If the Zoning board does not grant us this extension, we will have to stop all operations by the end of July and will not be able to renew the lease at our current location. SCA cannot afford even a temporary cessation of services; it is likely that we would have to close permanently. We would be faced with the prospect of finding homes for the 100+ animals in our care, and with the prospect of being forced to euthanize those who could not be re-homed,” the Facebook post added.
