Tasi to Table Inc. will be hosting a fishing derby for the organization’s student members on Tinian and Rota this July but further details and a tentative date are still in the works.

According to the organization’s president, Gene Weaver, July’s student fishing derby will be a shallow-bottom fishing event—a fishing technique where a weighted hook or lure is lowered to the bottom of a water column.

Having only launched the TTT chapters and four-month pilot programs on Tinian and Rota this year, Weaver said the fishing derby will serve as the pilot programs’ closer, leading into the launch of eight-month programs on both islands at the start of the next school year.

The last student derby that TTT held was its Youth Experiential Derby at the Smiling Cove Marina on June 12, where a Marianas High School student and a Rota High School student joined the veteran crew of Hagu Reel to win the event by capturing a 100-lb marlin.

Since there are many events on both Tinian and Rota that are scheduled for July, additional details about the fishing derby are still being worked on, Weaver said. “The date hasn’t been set yet because there’s a lot of activities going on in July, and so we will be going to Rota and Tinian in July for these students to experience shallow-bottom fishing,” he said.
