The Northern Marianas Technical Institute will be hosting a summer program for Tanapag Middle School’s Career and Technical Education students from June 28 to Aug. 2.

The five-week program will give the students exposure to entry-level construction, welding, culinary, automotive, and electronic work with the hopes that they pursue a trade profession in the future.

As of press time Tuesday, NMTI interim chief executive officer Jodina Attao said the number of summer program participants is looking to be between 30 to 50 students.

According to Attao, renovating and beautifying NMTI facilities has short and long-term components. In preparation for the summer program, Attao and NMTI staff have been working to convert a conference room into a “think tank,” decorating certain hallways with paintings, posting multiple safety signs in clear places, and doing general renovations all before this Friday.

As for her expectations for this year’s summer program, Attao hopes the students walk away from the program at least beginning to consider the possibility of pursuing a trade. “We want students, teachers, and parents to be able to see the outcome of the program. This is an opportunity for students to learn whether they want to be in the trades or go an academic route. Exposing kids [to the trades] at a young age can totally help develop that mindset,” said Attao.

Also according to Attao, the summer program was made possible through NMTI’s partnership with the CNMI Public School System and through working closely with PSS’ Dr. Jessica Taylor.
