Saipan Marianas Lions Club donates $3,500, wheelchairs

The Saipan Marianas Lions Club donated a total of $3,500 and two wheelchairs to four community organizations last June 4, using the proceeds from its 3rd Annual 5K Walkathon that was held on May 2.
The club donated $2,000 and two wheelchairs to the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.’s Dialysis Center, and $500 each to Karidat Social Services, Commonwealth Cancer Association, and the Tan Holdings Football Club.
According to outgoing president Ladyvir Dela Cruz Canape, the club chose these organizations in particular to support the Lions Clubs International’s global causes—relief for diabetes, world hunger, and childhood cancer. Additionally, Canape said the club chose to donate to Tan Holdings’ soccer team to “promote a healthy lifestyle [for the] youth by playing soccer.”

Some of the donation recipients who spoke with Saipan Tribune on Monday expressed gratitude for the club’s generosity.
“We thank them from the bottom of our hearts for thinking of CCA. …They’ve always been supportive, and the $500 they donated to us will go toward our Patient Assistance Program,” said CCA executive director Juan L. Babauta.

Nikki Villagomez, director of the CHCC Dialysis Center, said that everyone at the center greatly appreciated SMLC’s donations. Villagomez said the two donated wheelchairs are much-needed backups in case any of the center’s fleet of wheelchairs break down.
