Rotaract Family Sports Fiesta, Summer Shoot-out this Saturday

The Rotaract Club of Saipan is hosting a Family Sports Fiesta and Rotaract Summer Shoot-out at the Kagman Community Center this Saturday, June 12. Family Sports Fiesta begins at 9am and warmups for the basketball competitions begins at 10am. The Summer Shoot-out itself will begin at 10:30am.

The Family Sports Fiesta will feature stations where the community can try out different sports, including but not limited to mini-basketball, table tennis, soccer, and badminton, and games like cornhole and bocce.

As shared by current Rotaract president Keoni Hosono and director of Club Service and incoming president Richard Baleares, the club’s current plan is to give children who attend the event a “passport” that gets stamped every time they try out a different sport. Once the passport is fully stamped, they can turn in the passport for a chance at prizes while supplies last.

The Summer Shoot-out will feature “The Free-Throw Competition,” “The Around-the-World Challenge,” and “The Half-Court Bomber Challenge.” All of the events will have three age divisions: U16, U20, and U100.

For the Free-Throw-Competition, competitors will be given 1 minute to make as many shots from behind the free-throw line as they can, with one made shot equaling 1 point. Highest scorer in each of the three age divisions wins, and ties will be decided with a 30-second sudden-death round until the tie is broken.

For the Around-the-World Challenge, competitors must make a basket from marked points along the 3-point arc. The person to score a basket from all of the marked points the quickest will be the challenge’s champion.

For the Half-Court Bomber Challenge, each participant will be given three chances to make a basket from the half-court line. The challenge will serve as an intermission after three or four rounds of the Free-Throw Competition.

Hosono wishes for a good turnout at the Family Sports Fiesta. “I’m really hoping to get families to come out and play together. The Family Sports Fiesta is an opportunity for parents or siblings to have fun with their children or younger siblings,” said Hosono.

Baleares says that the dual event on Saturday will help fund the Rotaract’s future endeavors, and thanks those who helped make the events possible. “I’m hoping to get a pretty good turnout for this Saturday! The proceeds of this fundraiser goes to the Rotaract Club of Saipan’s service projects, and I’m hoping we can get more things done after this project. I would like to thank the Rotary Club of Saipan, [Rotarian] Greg Borja, [the Division of Youth Services], and all of our generous sponsors,” said Baleares.
