Traffic lights to be installed at intersection of Quartermaster and Beach Road
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held today, Thursday, at 10am for the federally-funded construction of traffic signals at the intersection of Quartermaster and Beach Road.
Department of Public Works Secretary James A. Ada said yesterday that the $2-million traffic signals project has been awarded to USA Fanter.
“This project has been long awaited,” said Ada, adding that previous contractor who was awarded the project was unable to meet the project’s demands, prompting DPW to rebid the project with additional funding.
He said the area—technically referred to as Route 315 (Quartermaster Roadway) merging with Route 33 (Beach Road) is an accident-prone point, warranting the installation of traffic signals to properly regulate the increased number of vehicles traversing on and off the route.
Ada urged motorists to be cautious when driving through the area as workers will soon begin the construction of the traffic lights, traffic poles, roadway stripings, and median redevelopment.
DPW Highway Branch project coordinator Kenn Aldan said the project is part of the Highway Master Plan development for roadway hazards and is funded through the Federal Highway Administration.
Meanwhile, Aldan also announced yesterday that due to the ongoing construction along Airport Road (Route 35), motorists going to the airport would have to detour to As Lito or San Vicente. Those coming from the airport, however, will still be able to use the road.
Aldan said the initial phase going toward the airport—the southbound lane—will undergo construction. Aldan said the southbound lane will be closed and signages have been placed to detour motorists toward As Lito (Route 37) and San Vicente roadway (Route 305 or the road going toward Dandan from San Vicente).
He said northbound motorists will still be able to traverse along Route 35 but southbound motorists will need to detour toward established directions.
Aldan said this traffic plan will continue throughout the phases of the construction.
Construction for Route 35 or Airport Road began last Monday. The construction will consist of existing asphalt, compacting of coral base course, and roadway paving.
