Fire near SCA is quickly contained
A brushfire near Saipan Cares for Animals in As Gonno last Sunday afternoon was soon extinguished, thanks to the quick response of the Department of Fire & Emergency Medical Services. A short video of the brushfire’s aftermath can be found on SCA’s Facebook page.
Chloe Steffen, a clinician who was working at SCA on Sunday, remembered being told by a colleague that there was huge amount of smoke outside and stepped outside to investigate. While outside, she remembers hearing the “roar” of a fire and seeing flames over 10 feet high peeking above the jungle brush across the street of the community rescue clinic.
Steffen and other SCA staff immediately called DFEMS, moved their cars, and relocated multiple puppies and young kittens indoors to protect their lungs from the smoke. Steffen said that when she called DFEMS, they were already aware of the fire and a team had already been sent out. DFEMS then contained and extinguished the fire.
Steffen said that SCA’s current location and the jungle brushes where the fires started are separated by a road in between, and that it was very fortunate the flames were contained before they were able to extend past the road.
