Five months since the inauguration of the 22nd Legislature, the Rota Legislative Delegation is finally organized, with Sen. Teresita A. Santos and Rep. Donald Manglona, both independents, elected as co-chairpersons.

At a meeting in the Senate chamber last Wednesday, members of the Rota delegation also elected Sen. Paul A. Manglona (Ind) as floor leader and Sen. Victor B. Hocog (R ) as legislative secretary.

It was Sen. Paul Manglona who nominated Rep. Donald Manglona as chair. Hocog nominated Santos as co-chair.

Santos told Saipan Tribune Friday that, now that they are officially organized, she hopes that they act immediately upon local bills and appropriations that provide funding for interisland medical referrals, local scholarship, and other locally created programs.

Santos said several bills have already had three appearances and have been referred to their delegation clerk for action. She said there are also correspondences from departments and agencies that require the delegation’s review and consideration.

The senator said their clerk has solicited comments such as from the Rota mayor, who by law has up to 30 days to submit comments on local and appropriation bills.

Like the rest of the delegation members, Santos said she looks forward to working with the CNMI’s leaders and municipalities, which stand to receive substantial amount of funding from the American Rescue Plan Act.

“It is hoped that the utilization of such funds will align with our island’s priorities that will certainly accomplish much for our people of Rota,” Santos said.

She underscored the need for the delegation members to continue to identify infusion of new funding to maintain the existing locally created programs and improving the delivery of services and programs to the people and community.
