MCS holds 3rd Annual Spring Band Concert

Mount Carmel School held its 3rd Annual Spring Band Concert last Friday and Saturday at the Mount Carmel Cathedral. Day 1 featured performances from the school’s 5th Grade Recorder Ensemble, MCS Beginning Band, and MCS Concert Band, while Day 2 featured a guest performance by the Su-san Band, the MCS Jazz Knights, and the MCS Wind Orchestra. The concert was originally scheduled to take place last year but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The two-day musical affair featured performances of Disney classics like The Lion Sleeps Tonight from the Lion King and the main theme from The Beauty and the Beast, a Studio Ghibli medley featuring music from the films Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro, jazz classics like Birdland and Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World, and Gurenge, the opening theme from the anime Demon Slayer.
This concert, along with MCS’ appearances at the Saipan Wind Band Festival, the National Music Festival+, and the school’s celebration of International Jazz Day on April 30 this year, are all part of a much-needed bounce back by the school’s music program following almost a year of inactivity in 2020.
In his closing statements, music teacher and band director Julian Greening thanked the Mount Carmel Cathedral for its permission to use the church as a concert venue, MCS teachers and administrators for helping take guest temperatures and distributing programs, and all parents and guardians of the musicians for their support. Greening also extended his gratitude to MCS president Dr. Galvin Deleon Guerrero for his support of the music program since its inception in 2017 and wished him all the best as he transitions later into his new role as Northern Marianas College president. “I will truly miss you, but I’m sure you will do great at your new position [as Northern Marianas College president]. Good luck on your new adventure that awaits you,” said Greening.
