Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) said over the weekend that if Gov. Ralph DLG Torres exercises his authority over child tax credit payments, qualifying families can receive $300 a month per child for children ages 0-5 and $250 a month per child for children ages 6-17 as early as this summer and until the end of the year.

In his e-kilili newsletter, Sablan also encouraged families with children, including those who don’t normally file or have earnings to report, to file their taxes by May 17 to ensure eligibility for the advanced monthly child tax payments.

At Sablan’s request, the American Rescue Plan Act included the authority for Torres to issue advance monthly child tax credits payments and $300,000 to cover administrative costs.

If Torres will not exercise his authority, the new expanded tax credit will be issued as a lump sum next year after families file their 2021 tax returns, he added.

Sablan said the U.S. Congress removed the minimum earnings requirement for this year so any individual or family, even if they do not earn an income, may qualify with an eligible child as long as they file their taxes.

According to the U.S. Internal Revenue Services’ website, for tax year 2021, families claiming the child tax credits for tax year 2021 will receive up to $3,000 per qualifying child between the ages of 6 and 17 at the end of 2021.

IRS said these families will receive $3,600 per qualifying child under age 6 at the end of 2021.

Under the prior law, the amount of the child tax credits was up to $2,000 per qualifying child under the age of 17 at the end of the year.
