Hannah Chae got an unexpected workout from unheralded Jeong Bin Park in the girls singles 12 division of the 2021 TSL CNMI Junior Tennis Tournament last Sunday at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.
The No. 1 seed went down early and often in the first set as an aggressive Park hit all her shots and scored an upset in the opening set, 6-4. Chae, however, woke up from her slumber in the second set and gave Park a dose of her down medicine with her own aggression and prevailed to force the super tiebreaker, 6-2. In the race-to-10, Chae outworked Park en route to winning the match, 10-5, to advance to the next round.
There were four other super tiebreakers Sunday. In the boys singles 14, top seed June Yu struggled but ultimately survived Henry Choi, 5-7, 6-2, 10-4. In the boys singles 12, Ryan Choi took the long route in prevailing over Jihun Park, 3-6, 6-4, 10-2, while Emmon Tang upset No. 3 Ki Won Lee, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7. Finally, Min Seong Kim outlasted Sam Culp in the boys singles 16 after a marathon score of 4-6, 6-4, 13-11.
In the other end of the scoring spectrum, boys singles 12 second seed Yutaka Kadokura blanked Ian Chae, 6-0, 6-0, while Ji Ho Park had an easier 6-0 victory over Michael Min Joon in the boys singles 10.
In the other matches in the boys singles 12, No. 1 Si Woe Lee topped Landon Pudney, 6-1, 6-1, Stephen Yeom took out Taher Shakir, 6-2, 6-4, and No. 4 Nathan Wessel was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Henry Yeom.
In the girls singles 14, Anne Lee got the better of Isa Nishitani, 6-1, 7-6 (4), top seed Irin Chung overcame Savita Sikkel, 6-2, 6-3, and No. 2 Hoo Wang beat Anna Jieun Kwon, 6-3, 6-2.
In the lone girls singles 18 match, Sei Yul Hong triumphed over Yebin Shin, 6-2, 6-2.
