Top seeds prevail in Day 1 of junior championships

Top seeds remained perfect in the first day of the 2021 TSL CNMI Junior Tennis Tournament last Saturday at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.
In the boys 18 singles, top seed Ji Min Woo didn’t even break into a sweat in his 6-0, 6-0 win over Jun Wong. Third seed Sean Lee had a bit of trouble against David Min Soo Kwan before prevailing, 6-2, 6-5 (retired). No. 4 Seon Geon Heo also made quick work of Daniel Dong Yeon Kang, 6-1, 6-1, while second seed Sam Ryu retired Andy Kim, 6-1, 3-1.
In the girls 18 singles, Serin Chung and Hye Jin Elliot blanked their respective opponents. The latter beat Sei Yul Hong, 6-0, 6-0, while the former beat Yebih Shin with the same score.
In the boys 16 singles, Cody Shimizu and Min Seong Kim advanced to the next round after beating Sam Culp (6-2, 6-2) and Andrew Chung (6-0, 7-6 (5)), respectively.
No. 2 Wataru Kadokura got the better of Simon Tang in the boys 14 singles, 6-3, 6-2, while Henry Choi blasted Vladimir Van Der Mas, 6-0, 6-1, in the same age group.
Landon Pudney (6-2, 6-4 over Taher Shakir), Henry Yeom (6-4, 6-4 over Ryan Choi), Ian Chai (6-2, 6-2 over Jihun Park), and Emmon Tang (2-6, 6-3, 11-9 over Stephen Yeom) were all also Day 1 winners in the boys 12 singles.
In the boys 10 singles, Nathan Su beat Michael Min Joon, 6-4, while Quido Lucas Jambor defeated Jin Ho Park, 6-1.
In the girls 14 singles, Anna Jieun Kwon was a 6-1, 6-0 victor over Isa Nishitani, while Savita Sikkel zeroed Anna Lee, 6-0, 6-0. The lone girls 12 singles match had Jeong Bin Park advance with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Eun Park.
The boys 12 doubles had Jihun Park and Pudney team up in vanquishing Jambor and Su, 6-4, 6-4, while Ryan Vhoi and Emmon Tang dropped the first set before beating the Yeom brothers in a tiebreak, 1-6, 6-4, 10-8.
The 2021 TSL CNMI Junior Tennis Tournament is being conducted with help from the Northern Mariana Islands Tennis Association.
