‘FEMA to help with funeral costs due to COVID-19 deaths’
Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) said over the weekend that the Federal Emergency Management Assistance will help with funeral expenses due to COVID-19 deaths by April 12, 2021.
In his e-kilili newsletter, Sablan said FEMA announced last Saturday that such assistance is available for funerals that took place in the United States after Jan. 20, 2020.
“An applicant for assistance must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or qualified alien,” the delegate said.
There were two reported deaths from COVID-19 in the CNMI. The first happened on March 30, 2020, at the Kanoa Resort quarantine site, while the second was on April 7, 2020 at the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.
Sablan said that multiple individuals who contributed to foot the expenses must file under one application. Assistance is limited to a maximum amount of $9,000 per funeral and a maximum of $35,000 per application.
FEMA encourages potential applicants to gather documentation that will be needed for the claim, such as official death certificate indicating death “may have been caused by” or “was likely the result of” COVID-19 or COVID-19-like symptoms and funeral expense receipts.
