Peter sworn in as public auditor

Kina Borja Peter, the first female public auditor of the CNMI, was sworn in yesterday at the Guma Hustisia for a six-year term and has set her sights on not just closing several pending audit cases but also for the audit process itself to go digital.
Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho administered the oath of office for Peter, who succeeds Mike Pai as head of the Office of the Public Auditor.
Peter passed the House of Representatives confirmation process in Dec. 22, 2020, with no objection, with only one senator voted no to her nomination last Jan. 8.
In an interview after being sworn in, Peter said she has been working with her team since January, soon after securing the position, to review all pending cases/audits and looking at the digitalization of audits. Peter said that since the CNMI Department of Finance kicked off its financial management system project, she has been talking with the project manager to see how they can go from hard copies of audits to digital copies.
“We’re in the process of getting more information from them to give us an idea of which system would be appropriate for our office. …We’re definitely moving forward in terms of assessing the appropriate software system for us to utilize,” said Peter.
With the transfer to digital audits, Peter said she is also looking at enhancing the OPA’s website.
According to Saipan Tribune archives, Peters is interested in going digital to boost OPA’s efficiency and productivity.
Peter is a former senior finance leader, senior accountant, senior manager, and accounting manager for Boeing Co.
As the first female public auditor of the CNMI, Peter encourages women to be leaders for the younger generation.
“Leadership is a choice and a commitment to constantly make positive changes. …It’s really on the leaders to take on the task to encourage and really work with their team members to grow and…be better visionaries,” said Peter.
Peter is married to former representative Marco T. Peter; they have two daughters.
