A silver pickup truck that was driving up Capital Hill yesterday morning caught fire just below the turn to CNMI Medicaid Office, causing a traffic jam in the area. A passing motorist managed to record the incident, causing the video clip to go viral on social media in the CNMI.

According to a Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services press statement, the pickup truck’s driver was safe and that no one was hurt in the incident. Also, no treatment was provided at the scene for medical complaints in relation to the fire.

The DFEMS statement said it was a firefighter assigned to the COVID-19 Task Force that called 911 at 11:04am to report the fire. Soon after, a fire engine and a DFEMS ambulance from the Garapan Fire Station were dispatched to the location at 11:07am. The fire engine arrived at the scene at 11:12am and was able to put out the flames by 11:17am.

Preliminary scene investigation by the DFEMS’ Division of Arson Investigation revealed the fire originated in the car’s engine compartment. The cause of the fire is still unknown and is still being processed.
