The Saipan Baseball Association has appointed Triple J’s Jay Santos to serve as the association’s new president.
Santos was officially appointed president during the first official board meeting for the new board members held last Monday. The new members include vice president George Norita Camacho, secretary Mark Flores, treasurer Bernard Cabrera, and board members Shine Tenorio, Pete Sablan, and Mark Toves.
According to Santos, as a baseball enthusiast for as long as he can remember, it was an honor to take up this new role.
“I’m very proud and very thankful to be voted on to the board for SBL and to be appointed as president by the board of directors. I’m very passionate about baseball [and] I have loved baseball basically my entire life,” he said.
As president, Santos’ main goal is to revive the beloved sport in the islands since the sport has been dormant since 2019.
“I truly want to see baseball flourish here in the islands again. It’s my intent to see what we can do to make baseball matter again. There hasn’t been any leagues or baseball organizations for some time now,” he said.
With the 2022 Pacific Mini Games to be hosted by the CNMI just right around the corner, Santos said the main focus will be to put together a team to represent the CNMI.
“Next year, there’s the Pacific Mini Games that the CNMI will be hosting so our focus right now is to put together a team that will compete in the Games and also organize a league to get competition going,” he said.
Back in 2011, the CNMI National Baseball Team made it to the playoffs in the 2011 Pacific Mini Games in Noumea and ended up in first place to win the gold medal in New Caledonia.
The Pacific Mini Games, which was originally scheduled for 2021, was pushed back as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic that put an indefinite pause on nearly all activities, sporting events were no exemption.
The Pacific Mini Games is now set to take place from June 17 to 25, 2022 in the CNMI.
