NMI Model United Nations fight zombies
The NMI Model United Nations hosted a virtual MUN conference last week in preparation for the regional Northern Marianas Island MUN Conference, which will be held this week on March 1 and 2.
Students from high school and middle school island wide participated in the virtual MUN conference, with Saipan International School and Grace Christian Academy students participated for the high schools and Seventh Day Adventist, Saipan International School, and Grace Christian Academy students participating for middle school.
In last week’s conference, the students participated in a mock plague similar to the zombie movie World War Z, where the students had to work together on solving the plague, similar to the set-up and purpose of Model United Nations, where students play the role of delegates from different countries and attempt to solve real world issues with the policies and perspectives of their assigned country.
During the conference, each student was given specific roles which were based on characters from the movie. One example was taking the traits of the character named Adm. Xu Zhi Cai, who, in the movie, had the powers over the military. Another character, Dr. Fernando Oliveria, had the most knowledge in the vaccines, which played a key part in the movie. Each student then had to use the traits of the characters they were given and cooperate with other delegates in order to come up with a solution to stop the spread of the zombies and the virus itself.
This is less formal style committees of Model United Nations are called “crisis” committees, in which the students are given fictional or nonfictional characters as their roles instead of countries. The purpose of these committees is to add a little more fun to the debates for delegates but also allows them to develop their skills in creativity, impromptu, and public speaking.
“I wanted to give the students a more fun and easy way to approach Model United Nations by incorporating popular media and the skills needed for debating, and I am glad it turned out well,” said NMI Model United Nations president Eileen No.
