The battle for the first Ace title in the Saipan Golfers Association was a close one with Das Krishnan pulling off the win in last month’s SGA January Ace of the Month Tournament at Coral Ocean Point.
Krishnan fired a net 69 for a one-shot win over Tony Benavente. At close third was Alex Tudela, who recorded a net 71—the same score Larry Deleon Guerrero posted, but the former prevailed in the deadlock for third place via the scorecard tiebreak.
The 12-handicapper Krishnan shot a 42 on the front nine and 39 on the back for a gross 81. Benavente had a better gross score at 78 (41 and 37 on the front and back nines, respectively), but he sports an 8 handicap, leaving him one shot short (70) of matching Krishnan’s mark. Alex Tudela, a 10-handicapper, carded a 41 in the first nine holes and 40 in the last for a gross 81. The 18-handicapper Deleon Guerrero, on the other hand, tallied a 45 on the front and 44 on the back for a gross 89.
Meanwhile, besides surviving the close fight for the SGA January Ace, Krishnan also won in the closest to the pin contest on hole No. 14. Other closest to the pin winners were Mariano Fajardo (hole No. 3), Benavente (No. 7), and John “Nanni” Cruz (No. 12). In the longest drive competition, Rick Kautz and Tudela prevailed on hole No. 1 and 18, respectively.
With the January Ace event in the books, up next for SGA is the February tournament set for this Sunday at the Kingfisher Golf Links. Tee off is at 9am, while show time is scheduled for 8:30am.
