Man drowns at Lao Lao Bay

A man drowned last Saturday, Feb. 13, at Lao Lao Bay in Dandan.

Police rescuers tried to revive the victim but he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Commonwealth Health Center.

According to a Department of Public Safety statement of the incident, DPS received a 911 call reporting an overdue swimmer at about 5:24pm last Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021. Patrol units and medics were dispatched to the area. The Impact rescue boat was also dispatched from the Smiling Cove Marina.

DPS Boating Safety units and medics arrived at the area a few minutes after, as the DPS rescue boat arrived at the southern end of the channel by 6:03pm. At around 6:12pm, the DPS boat came across an unresponsive individual floating face down. The victim was brought onto the vessel where they performed cardio pulmonary resuscitation and rescue breaths. The DPS rescue boat made its way back to Smiling Cove Marina where medics were on standby. At about 6:48pm, the victim was rushed from the Smiling Cove Marina to CHC where Dr. Martin Rorhinger pronounced the victim dead due to drowning at 7:07pm.

In a police interview with the caller, she stated that she and the victim got to Lao Lao Bay at around 4:45pm and that she had gone for a 15- to 20-minute swim before returning to shore. She noticed the victim change to his swim shoes and took his mask and snorkel before going in the water. After about 30 minutes she did not see the victim, so she immediately called for police assistance. The police report did not indicate the relationship between the two, nor the age of the victim and other details. (PR)
