The CNMI Department of Labor met Wednesday last week with the 22nd Legislature’s Senate Committee on Judiciary, Government, Law and Federal Relations, chaired by Sen. Karl King-Nabors (R-Tinian), to provide an update on the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, as well as provide a briefing on the other programs under CNMI DOL.

King-Nabors had invited Labor Secretary Vicky Benavente and the DOL staff after recently visiting the offices of the Department of Labor on Capital Hill.

Benavente and Labor staff presented the members of the Senate JGLFR committee detailed statistics, financial data, and discussed challenges with implementing the PUA program, from its inception in early 2020 to the current date.

“We also provided information about other components of the Department of Labor, such as the [Workforce Investment Agency], [Occupational Safety and Health Administration], Enforcement, Administrative Hearing Office, and Employment Services,” said Benavente.

The Department of Labor is also scheduled to meet with members of the House Committee on Federal and Foreign Affairs, chaired by Rep. Vicente C. Camacho (D-Saipan). (PR)
