Final Four Spring Break Sonnets
Readers, here are the final four sonnets I wrote during Spring Break and National Poetry Month 2014.
Sonnet No. 1 WAS written eight miles high over the Pacific; sonnet No. 2 coming into Hong Kong; sonnet No. 3 between HK and Guam; sonnet No. 4 flying up from Guam over Naftan Rock, Aguigan, and Tinian to Saipan. A bit of doggerel to introduce them:
FINAL FOUR SPRING BREAK SONNETS
Airy fairy, they’re all air balls indeed
Nothing but net and half court hooks
Flying at five hundred MPH the speed
In the basketball of my brain it cooks
Eight miles high, space, love, and home
In uncomfortable seats I write each poem
#1. UNIVERSE? MULTIVERSE? I AM ALL YOURS
I am all yours but lost somewhere
Lost in the atmosphere above Juarez
On a cosmic road rising desert air
Lost in a dream like the old song says
You can’t find me and I can’t find you
Our spirits soar stellar super nova bright
Dark stormy weather hides a sky of blue
Black holes not any easier to find at night
Oh wake me up way before the dawn
The planet Venus shines far off in the East
Cold and shivering I start to yawn
Your smile a fresh memory at least
Our love is both a blessing and a curse
Lost in the multiverse it could be worse
#2. BOOMERS BETWEEN the IMMENSITIES
Long time the greenbacks daily we all sought
Barely taking time for a vacation
Overcome by rust grudgingly we bought
Cars or trucks to fix the situation
Apartment to house we moved as we grew
We, then our kids got an education
Learning about drugs and booze we turned blue
Taking advantage of situations
Life was full of surprises and new plans
Discussing problems and propensities
Mortgages, bankrupt, still major league fans
Stumbling along between the IMMENSITIES
Yes, BIRTH and DEATH, some tales not yet spoken
Still blooming, mature flowers, not broken
#3. LOVE AS A MONTHLY TYPHOON
Love doth reign and live in each monthly moon
Builds itself up and down for twenty eight days
Waxes on with growing light, wanes too soon
Comes and goes, man, woman, rabbit, many ways
Clouds gather one fine morn, build towards evening
Even Cupid seeks prognostication
Cyclonic choruses begin to sing
Crescendo to a heartfelt location
Love leaps over latitudes of attitudes
But “Here comes your nineteenth nervous breakdown”
In the eye of the storm pleasant platitudes
Feeder bands drop salty tears of a clown
Yet this temporary typhoon doth move
Sweet cyclic winds to meet and greet our love
#4. HOME ON TINIAN
Happy the man and woman who have gone
Traveling far throughout Micronesia
Meeting people, watching sunset and dawn
Where everyday seems to reach out and please ya
Ai adai, When will I return and how
long will it be before I finally reach
Unai Dankolo, Kammer, and Taga Beach
Or walk down a road, a chalan kaskao?
Oh how I miss my home in palm tree shade
No city high rises – concrete and steel made
Can compare with the clean waters where I wade
More than New York state I love Tinian
The sea’s salty breeze and cooling trade winds
The place, its people, my students and friends
