Increase in fuel prices continues
The upward trend in CNMI fuel prices continues, with oil companies in the CNMI raising prices by another 10 cents.
Mobil Oil Marianas took the lead early Friday morning, raising the price of their Extra Fuel by 10 cents a gallon. Shell Marianas followed suit the next morning.
Gas prices went up from $3.88 for a gallon of Extra fuel to $3.98 per gallon. Mobil’s Supreme fuel is now $4.43 per gallon.
The lowest price of fuel in the CNMI before the government shutdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic was $3.83. Gas is now 15 cents higher than pre-COVID days.
According to motorist who requested that he be named only as Juan, the increase in gas prices shouldn’t come as a shock anymore. “Everything is increasing now so gas prices will also increase. I should have bought plenty of gas while the gas was like $3,” he said.
Another motorist said she didn’t even notice that gas prices increased. “I never realized gas was always changing. I just buy the same amount of gas that I always do and if the gas gauge goes up, then I’m good” she said.
According to various media outlets, gas increases are happening as people return to work, with COVID-19 protocols gradually loosening.
During the heat of the COVID-19 pandemic, quarantine was implemented in various states so fewer people were driving to work and less gas was consumed.
