Crash sends 1 to ICU and 5 to DOC
A car crash in Oleai last Christmas Eve sent one individual to the Intensive Care Unit of the Commonwealth Health Center, while five others were booked and detained at the Department of Corrections.
According to a source who requested anonymity, one of the six passengers involved in the vehicle collision on Christmas Eve remains in the ICU after sustaining major injuries as a result of the crash.
Department of Public Safety spokesperson Dre Pangelinan said the other five were arrested and detained at DOC.
According to a DPS press release, DPS received a call at about 8:45pm on Dec. 24, reporting a white Toyota Prius that was driving recklessly through the village of Tanapag while the vehicle’s passengers were yelling profanities.
The individuals were reportedly southbound so police were dispatched to areas headed south.
One officer in Garapan noticed a vehicle heading south along Beach Road that matched the description in the APB, or all-points bulletin.
As the officer attempted to initiate a violator stop, the vehicle suddenly sped up and attempted to flee so the officer notified Central that the vehicle continued to pick-up speed along Beach Road.
Police reported that the vehicle continued traveling southbound until it struck another vehicle traveling in the same direction while also hitting a pathway street lamp, before turning turtle.
Officers reported that the overturned vehicle was along Beach Road near Char’s Market in Oleai.
Immediately after the crash, police saw five of the six individuals fleeing the scene on foot.
The vehicle’s operator, Benster Saimon Benjamin Jr., 18, was arrested on multiple charges, including reckless driving, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, minor consuming liquor, and giving a false report to a police officer.
Atan Komaki,18, was arrested for minor consuming liquor and giving a false report to a police officer.
The three other passengers, who were all juveniles, were arrested for minor consuming liquor. The one who landed at the ICU was not identified.
