The Superior Court has imposed a six-month prison sentence on a man punched his aunt in a fit of rage.

Zeric Gant, 21, pleaded guilty to assault and battery before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho and was sentenced to a prison term of six months, all suspended, with credit for time served.

Gant was released last week and was placed under supervised probation for a year.

In addition, Gant was ordered to pay $25 in court costs and a $120 supervision fee, and to stay away from the victim.

Gant must also complete 40 hours of community service that may be converted to fines at a rate of $7.50 per hour, subject to approval by the Office of Adult Probation.

Gant was represented by assistant public defender Karie Comstock, while assistant attorney general Steven C. Kessell appeared for the CNMI government.

According to court documents, police arrested Gant on June 15, 2020, for punching his aunt inside a vehicle.

The victim told police that she was taking Gant to Saipan Health Clinic because Gant’s hand had been injured. On the way to the clinic, she said Gant started acting differently, was allegedly rocking back and forth in his seat, and started rubbing his thighs and knuckles together. Gant then told the victim that he was going kill her.

She felt scared, but did not say anything and just kept driving until Gant punched her on the right side of her face with his left hand.

The victim continued driving Gant to the clinic. Upon arriving there, she registered Gant and used the front desk phone to call for help as she did not have her cellphone on her at that time.
