Tropical Depression 22W has strengthened and has been upgraded to Tropical Storm Goni as it continues en route to the Philippines.

Tropical Depression 22W strengthened overnight and reached tropical storm intensity early yesterday morning.

The National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, reported that Goni remains west of the Marianas and poses no threat as it tracks westward toward the Philippine.

However, a tropical disturbance over Chuuk is still expected to pass south of Guam this weekend.

NWS stated that people of the Marianas should expect the strongest winds associated with the disturbance to be offshore and south of Guam, and nearer to the low-level circulation.

The Marianas will see winds gradually increase through Friday afternoon to between 15 and 20 mph, and to between 20 and 25 mph on Saturday with stronger gusts.

Showers are expected to increase Friday afternoon and overnight across the region while seas could become hazardous to small craft by Saturday along with a high risk of rip currents.

NWS stated that the broad and disorganized disturbance that they had been closely observing is beginning to show some consolidation over and south of Chuuk State.

A low-level circulation was evident west southwest of Weno, Chuuk yesterday and was last seen heading slowly west, northwest. (Kimberly Bautista)
